CatLABS has announced a brand new black and white film emulsion that promises unique grain and tonal range to produce photos that the company says are unlike anything else on the market.

CatLABS is a Boston, Massachusetts-based film and photographic equipment distributor that is dedicated to large format photography. CatLABS says it is one of the only places in the world specifically dedicated to large format photography, and carry a wide range of cameras, lenses, film holders, tripods, film and all other related accessories. The company also provides film processing and is now producing its own.

Called CatLABS X FILM 320 Pro, the new emulsion is available in 35mm and 120 film formats and is wholly unique to CatLABS and unavailable from any other maker in another packaging, as is sometimes the case with other films. The company says this new black and white film was made with the highest quality control, making this film on par with other major film manufacturers and brings superb image quality and unique characteristics.

Film 320 Pro is described as a classic, medium-speed film designed for a wide array of shooting conditions but is ideal as a “street film” due to its versatility and how it renders photos.

“Following in the footsteps of some classic historic films, CatLABS X FILM 320 is characterized by its distinct grain quality, contrast and tonal range, not found with other currently available films,” CatLABS says.

The film is described by the company as producing unique dark greys with a metallic or almost-silver look. It can be used in low or available light situations as it has a broad exposure range under different levels of light.

“For best results, rate it at 200 ISO when shooting outdoors under bright sunlight. Push it as high as 1600 when shooting under artificial or low light conditions,” the company says.
